Google Storage Full? How to Free Up Space in Gmail, Drive and Photos

Your 15 GB is shared by Gmail, Drive, Photos and even WhatsApp backups. Here's how to find what's filling it and clear gigabytes in about half an hour, before Gmail stops receiving mail.

If your Google storage is full, open Google One storage manager first. It shows how much space Gmail, Drive and Photos each use, and lists your largest files and emails so you can delete them in bulk. Then empty the trash in all three, because deleted items keep using space until the trash is cleared.

Every Google account gets 15 GB free, and that 15 GB is shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Once it runs out, new photos stop backing up, Drive stops syncing and Gmail can stop sending and receiving email. Here's how to find what's filling it and get the space back without paying.

What happens when your Google storage is full

According to Google's own help page, once you go over your limit:

  • You can't upload new files to Drive or back up new photos and videos to Google Photos.
  • Gmail sending and receiving can be affected, so people who email you may get a bounce.
  • You can't create new Docs, Sheets or Slides files until you free up space.
  • You can still sign in, and your existing files stay where they are.

The part most people miss: if an account stays over its limit for two years or more, Google says all its content in Gmail, Photos and Drive may be removed. Google promises to warn you at least three months before that happens, but it's a good reason not to ignore the "storage full" banner.

Why is my Google storage full?

Usually it's one of these, roughly in this order:

  1. Google Photos backup. Phone videos are the biggest culprit. A few minutes of 4K video can take more space than years of emails.
  2. Old email attachments. PDFs, forwarded videos and photos sent back and forth over the years.
  3. WhatsApp backup on Android. Since 2024, WhatsApp chat backups to Google Drive count towards your Google storage, as 9to5Google reported when the change was announced. A backup with lots of media can run into several gigabytes.
  4. Android device backups from phones you no longer use.
  5. Trash and Spam that haven't been emptied.

That's also why storage can still look full after you delete things: the files are sitting in the trash. Gmail and Drive empty their trash automatically after 30 days, but you don't have to wait.

Step 1: See what's using your space

Open one.google.com/storage/management on your phone or computer, or go to the Google One app and tap Storage. You'll see a bar split into Gmail, Drive and Photos, plus a "Clean up space" section with ready-made groups like large files, discarded emails and blurry photos. Start with whichever service is biggest. Clearing 50 small emails won't help if Photos is using 12 GB.

Step 2: Clear Gmail fast with search operators

Gmail's search box can find space-hogging emails in seconds. Type any of these into the search bar, select all results and delete. These operators come from Gmail's search help page.

Type this in Gmail searchWhat it finds
larger:10MEvery email bigger than 10 MB, usually ones with videos or big attachments
has:attachment larger:5M older_than:1yEmails over 5 MB with attachments that are more than a year old
category:promotions older_than:6mOld promotional emails from shops and apps
category:social older_than:6mOld notifications from social media

When you "select all", Gmail selects only the first page. Look for the link at the top that says "Select all conversations that match this search" to delete everything at once.

Then open Trash and click "Empty Trash now", and do the same in Spam. Before you delete old bills, tax documents or ID scans, download the ones you need to keep.

Step 3: Clear Google Drive

  1. On a computer, go to drive.google.com/drive/quota. This lists every file in Drive from largest to smallest.
  2. Delete old videos, duplicate zips and installers you no longer need.
  3. Check Backups (in the Drive app menu, or under Storage in Drive on the web). Delete device backups from old phones.
  4. Empty the Drive trash.

Files someone else owns and shared with you don't count towards your storage. Only files you own do.

Step 4: Shrink Google Photos without losing your pictures

Photos is where the biggest wins usually are.

  • Delete large videos first. In the Google Photos storage manager you'll find groups such as large photos and videos, screenshots and blurry photos. Clearing old screenshots and forwarded videos alone can free a surprising amount.
  • Switch backup to Storage saver. In Photos settings, change backup quality from Original to Storage saver. Photos are compressed slightly. On a phone screen most people can't tell the difference. New backups still count towards your storage, but they take less space.
  • Compress what's already backed up. On a computer, go to photos.google.com/settings, open Manage storage and use Recover storage to convert existing photos and videos to Storage saver. Google's Photos help page explains it. This can free a lot of space in one go, but it can't be undone, so download any originals you care about first, such as wedding photos.
  • Empty the Photos bin.

One caution: if Photos is syncing, deleting a photo in the Google Photos app also deletes it from your phone. If you only want to free up space on the phone, use "Free up space" in the app instead, which removes local copies that are already backed up.

Step 5: Trim your WhatsApp backup

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup. Turn off Include videos if it's on. Then go to Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage and delete large forwarded videos and media from groups you don't care about. The next backup will be much smaller.

Still not enough? Should you pay for Google One?

If you've cleaned up and still need more than 15 GB, a Google One plan is the simple fix. Plans in India start with small storage tiers and go up to multiple terabytes, and prices and offers change often, especially around Diwali sales. Check the current rates on the Google One plans page. The annual plan usually works out cheaper than paying monthly, and one plan can be shared with up to five family members.

Two free alternatives are worth a thought before you pay:

  • Move old photos to a hard disk or laptop using Google Takeout (takeout.google.com), then delete them from Photos.
  • Use a second Google account for things like video archives. It's free, but juggling two accounts gets messy, so it's best for files you rarely open.

Beware of "storage full" scam messages

Fraudsters send emails and SMS saying "Your cloud storage is full, your photos will be deleted today" with a link to pay. Google doesn't threaten same-day deletion, and it won't ask you to pay through a random link. Check your storage only by opening one.google.com yourself. Frequently asked questions

Why is my Google storage full even after deleting files?

Deleted items stay in the trash and keep using space until the trash is emptied. Empty the trash in Gmail, Drive and Photos, and check Spam. Storage figures can also take a few hours to update after a big clean-up.

Can I receive emails if my Google storage is full?

Not reliably. When you're over the limit, Gmail can stop sending and receiving, and senders may get a bounce message. Free up even a small amount of space and email starts working again.

Is the "Google storage full" message a scam?

The warning inside Gmail, Drive or the Google One app is real. Emails or SMS with a payment link threatening to delete your photos today are usually scams. Check by opening one.google.com directly.

Does Google storage cost money in India?

The first 15 GB is free with every Google account. Beyond that you need a paid Google One plan, billed monthly or yearly. Current prices are on the Google One plans page.

Do WhatsApp backups use Google storage?

Yes, on Android. WhatsApp chat backups to Google Drive now count towards your Google account's storage. Turning off video backup makes them much smaller.
