RBI refund timelines for a failed UPI transaction

These come from RBI's circular on turnaround time (TAT) for failed transactions, which applies to every bank and UPI app.

What to do in the first hour

  • Don't pay again straight away.
  • Check the status in the app, not only the SMS.
  • Note the UPI reference number (UTR).
  • Ask the receiver to check their bank statement.

Is the ₹100 a day compensation real?

Yes, and on paper you don't have to claim it. The circular says banks must credit it on their own once the deadline passes.

When it isn't a "failed" payment

  • You sent money to the wrong UPI ID or number and it went through.
  • You were tricked into paying.
  • The merchant says they weren't paid, but your app shows success.
